In his KOSMOS lectures at the Berliner Universität in 1828, Alexander von Humboldt played a key role in shaping the view of the modern natural sciences. In the KOSMOS lectures organized by Prof. Christoph Schneider at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in 2019, international researchers explored Humboldt's views, which are still relevant today, and applied them to questions of modern research. This anthology brings together five selected and revised contributions from the lecture series.

This edited volume presents selected topics from the KOSMOS lectures at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in 2019 in the editorial, five academic contributions and a lecture manuscript. The contributions follow the thesis that Humboldt's way of thinking represents a template for science in the Anthropocene.
The book launch took place as part of this year's "Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften" at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Together with some of the authors represented in the volume, Prof. Oliver Lubrich and Prof. Wolfgang Lucht, as well as students and the audience, the editor, Prof. Christoph Schneider, discussed sustainability, climate change and the relevance of Humboldt's theses on these and other topics.
