BerlinUP at DHd conference "Reputation ohne Paywall?"

Oct 08, 2024

The "Digitales Publizieren" working group of the Digital Humanities im deutschsprachigen Raum (DHd) is organizing a conference to mark its tenth anniversary entitled "Reputation ohne Paywall? Wissenschaftliches Publizieren im digitalen Wandel" (Reputation without paywall? Academic publishing in the digital transformation) from 7.10. to 9.10.2024 in Darmstadt. BerlinUP is represented with a presentation on "Strategien des Reputationsaufbaus bei Berlin Universities Publishing" (Strategies for reputation building at Berlin Universities Publishing).

Abstract

Berlin Universities Publishing (BerlinUP) is the joint university publishing house of Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin and Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin. BerlinUP deliberately aims to offer an alternative to profit-oriented, commercial academic publishers and focuses on a publication model for books and journals that is free of charge for publishers and readers in the sense of Diamond Open Access.

As a young publishing house, which celebrated its official opening in fall 2023, BerlinUP is committed to high quality standards in order to establish itself in the competitive landscape of academic publishing with scholar-led publication infrastructures. In doing so, BerlinUP puts the interests of science at the forefront and is committed to moving away from exclusively quantitative indicators for assessing research quality, including the ranking of publication organs and publishers.

In the presentation, strategies for reputation building at BerlinUP will be presented, which deal with various aspects such as governance, values, quality assurance, communication, branding, cooperation and sustainability. One focus is on the formal, technical, content-related and ethical criteria of quality assurance for scientific publications.

A particular challenge for Diamond Open Access is the efficient use of resources. For this reason, the strategic orientation and further development of infrastructures and services for scholarly publishing must be located within the framework of national, European and international open research initiatives from the outset. BerlinUP would like to share its experiences to date and put forward future plans for discussion.

Referent: Dr. Michael Kleineberg

The presentation will be held in German language.
